Corrientes Avenue (Avenida Corrientes) is most beloved by the “porteños” because it has all kind of nice stores where you can buy books ore go to the theater and grab a pizza on the way!
Corrientes has the biggest concentration of libraries and theatres from the entire city. It was named del Sol during the 17th century, San Nicolás from 1738 to 1808, and de Incháurregui from 1808 until 1822, when it received its current name. In 1938 the street was widened and turned into an avenue.
This avenue extends 69 blocks from Puerto Madero neighborhood up to Chacarita! Under the Avenida Corrientes runs a metro station, Linea B runs most of it underneath the street. The “Asociacion Amigos de la Calle Corrientes” is a group that collaborated on the urban planning of the street and this resulted in distinguished figures from the tango history. On 40 corners they have placed sculpted figures.
My memories of Avenida Corrientes go back when I arrived the first day in Buenos Aires, from the office my manager gave me the address of my house and put me in a taxi going from 9 de Julio to Avenida Corrientes. My taxi stopped a cross the Abasto shopping hall and finally a new place that I would call home.
Many times I was wondering through this amazing street, and so many times in so many shops I drunk a cup of coffee ‘con tres asucar’. I didn’t know where I was, I didn’t know any one, but now I know, now I remember and thanks for that.
Avenida Corrientes my favorite street in the world!
